Football/ European Cup/Marseille/Benfica/ Tapie/ Contaux. A - Lot 158
Football/ European Cup/Marseille/Benfica/ Tapie/ Contaux. A rare and long-forgotten commemorative medal saluting Marseille's victory over Benfica in the first leg of the 1990 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final at the Vélodrome, 2-1 on April 4, 1990. In front of 42,000 spectators, Sauzée and Papin scored, and Lima replied once. This souvenir is a good reworking of a work by Georges Contaux (1891-1984). In the return match on April 18, the Portuguese club triumphed by the narrowest of margins, thanks to a very, very contentious goal by Angola's Vata. With away goals counting double, Benfica qualified for the final, which they lost to AC Milan. President Bernard Tapie drew lessons from this misadventure, which in a way laid the foundations for OM's triumph over AC Milan in Munich on May 5, 1993 (Boli, ). Meanwhile, in 1991, Marseille reached the final but lost on penalties to Red Star Belgrade in Bari. Diameter: 5cm. A rare item.
