[DIDEROT (Denis)], DU CHATELET (Emilie),... - Lot 1 - Vermot et Associés
[DIDEROT (Denis)], DU CHATELET (Emilie), GALIANI, SUARD, ETC..: Opuscules philosophiques et littéraires, mostly posthumous or unpublished. Paris, Imprimerie de Chevet, 1796. In-8 (200 x 120 mm), contemporary blue boards, smooth spine decorated, (2) f., (12), 270 p., (1) p. 'A l'éditeur', verso blanc, untrimmed. Collective first edition, and one of the few copies in octavo format, on large paper (fine vellum) of this collection compiled by Jean Baptiste Antoine Suard and Simon-Jérôme Bourlet de Vauxcelles, which revolves around Diderot: two of his works are given, including the first-edition 'Supplément au voyage de Bougainville', which alone occupies almost a third of the volume. - Also by Diderot, 'Entretien d'un philosophe avec la Maréchale de M***' - Emilie du Châtelet's 'Réflexions sur le bonheur', a private text composed between 1744 and 1746, which remains her only personal work. This important essay has been the subject of recent critical essays and a reappraisal in the context of female Enlightenment production. - Du bonheur des sots', by Necker. - 'Le vrai philosophe', by Du Marsais - 'Les Femmes, Dialogue', by Galiani 'Anecdote sur le Roi de Prusse' by Antoine-Léonard Thomas and 'Le bon homme, Conte moral ou Histoire scandaleuse'. "A systematic demolition of the civil and religious codes of 18th-century Europe, the 'Supplément au voyage de Bougainville' is a war machine directed against absurd and contradictory legislation. The product of a disastrous alliance between sword and goupillon, these laws promote false needs and chimerical virtues that distort the individual. This vehement indictment is articulated with a Tahitian dream that crumbles over the course of a polymorphous dialogue" (M. Mat, 'Diderot et son temps', no. 144 - Hatchuel catalog entry 2023). A fine copy.
