Large and strong in-8 full brown morocco, wide gilt framing on covers with straight gilt fillets or ribbon knots, 4-nerved spine, gilt fillet decorated boxes, gilt fillet on edges, gilt edges on witnesses, inner gilt fillet border, floral moire lining and endpapers, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, lined slipcase (René Kieffer). Illustrated with 41 etchings by Luc Olivier Merson, engraved by Carlo Chessa (1855-1912) and printed in intaglio. First illustrated edition of this vast dramatic composition (published in 1828) evoking the insurrection of the serfs against the nobility in the 14th century. Limited edition of 289 numbered copies, this one on Arches (n°80) including, in addition to the final state of the etchings, 3 additional states of the etchings. A superb copy.
