NASA. LARGE FORMAT. Saturn's moon Lapetus is perfectly rendered here in a false-color mosaic showing the entire hemisphere of Lapetus as seen by the Cassini spacecraft when it flew over Saturn's moon in 2007. The geological structures that mark the rear hemisphere are revealed here for the first time in detail. The region appears to be heavily cratered, particularly in the north and south polar regions. Near the top of the mosaic, numerous impacts visible on images from NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft (acquired in 1981) are visible, notably the Ogier and Charlemagne craters. The most prominent topographical feature in this view, in the lower half of the mosaic, is a 450-kilometer-wide impact basin, one of nine such large basins on Iapetus. In fact, the basin overlaps an older impact basin of similar size to the southeast. In many places, the dark matter, thought to be composed of organic nitrogen compounds called cyanides, hydrated minerals and other carbonaceous minerals, appears to cover a layer of aluminum oxide. 2007.Vintage chromogenic print.
