Our drawing can be compared with the second plan (in reverse) of a composition by Jordaens with a proverb as its theme (R.-A. d'Hulst, Jordaens drawings, Brussels, 1974, ed. Phaidon, volume I, no. A212, repr. volume II, fig.227). In the foreground, a man is undertaking a young woman; the madman is watching them from the window in the background, while behind him an old man is reading a book.
