GUERRE de VENDEE - Reunion of two memoirs... - Lot 184 - Vermot et Associés
GUERRE de VENDEE - Reunion of two memoirs bound in 1 vol. in-8 period half calf, spine ribbed and decorated (very worn binding, freckles). 1/Mémoires de madame la Marquise de Bonchamps, rédigés par Mme la Comtesse de Genlis; suivis des pièces justificatives. Baudouin Frères, 1823. 112 pages; 2/Mémoires de Mme la Marquise de La Rochejaquelein, written by herself and edited by M. de Barante. Baudouin Frères, 1823. iv and 512 pages. Collection of Memoirs relating to the French Revolution. "Bonchamps was one of the heroes of the military Vendée. His wife followed him in his campaigns and entrusted his memories to Mme de Genlis, who put them into shape." (Fierro, 175) -- "Wife of one of the great leaders of the Vendée, the Marquise de La Rochejaquelein left memoirs dealing essentially with the great royalist insurrection in the West between 1792 and 1795. These memoirs have given rise to much debate, with the first two editions marked "rédigés par M. de Barante" (written by M. de Barante). It seems that Barante, then sub-prefect in Bressuire, only wrote a small part of the text." (Fierro, 830).
