Jules-Elie DELAUNAY(Nantes1828-1891, painter, Prix de Rome, received official commissions for panels for the Opéra Garnier, Paris City Hall, the nave of the Panthéon etc., Member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts) / Victor Menget's file concerning Delaunay: purchases of paintings and help given to the painter - Victor Menget, shoemaker in Baboeuf (Oise) developed the manufacture of shoes for the army in 1870, built factories and thus made his fortune, all documents are written and signed in Delaunay's hand: 1°) 13 septembre 1881, reçu de 250 frs pourson tableauintitulé "Une Reconnaissance", 1 p in-4 sur papier à en-tête "Manufactures de Chaussures Victor Menget - Usine à Baboeuf", timbre fiscal - 2°) 14 mars 1882, reçu de 500 frs à titre deprêt(initialement 450, puis annulé), en-tête "Manufacture de Chaussures Victor Menget", 1 p in-4, timbre fiscal - 3°) 30 juillet 1882, Lettre (1 p in-8): "Just as I'm about to leave for the country, I learn of the date we're on, and as I have to pay on the 31st, I've come to ask you if, on the paper I've written, you'd like to add the sum that would complete the price agreed for the portrait, because without it I'd be embarrassed. This does not commit you any more than the rest before the portrait is finished. If it can be done, I would be a thousand times grateful if you could tell me if I can go on Monday morning to get the answer" - 4°) Undated (July 31, 1882), letter (1 p in-8): "Please tell the person who is giving you this note whether you received my letter of yesterday and what you decide for me" - 5°) July 7, 1883, receipt for 1000 frs for his painting at the 1883 Salon "Batterie d'Artillerie", 1 p in-4 on paper headed Manufacture de Chaussures Victor Menget, tax stamp - 6°) January 31, 1884, receipt for 60 frs for a painting of "Peonies" and 2 small sketches of "Women" - 7°) May 2, 1884, receipt for 110 frs as a loan and summary below (probably in Menget's handwriting) of sums paid, 1 p in-12 - 8°) Undated (July 1884), letter (1 p in-8 on mourning paper): "According toyour kindness to take away my worries and so that I can work at the moment, I've come to tell you that July 15 has passed and that I'm being asked for the thing in question [rent]. If you could tomorrow morning, Saturday the 19th, I'd be a thousand times grateful to you" - Enclosed: 3 rent receipts (large in-8 oblong) from Delaunay for his artist's studio at 18 rue Chabrol, totaling 178.55 frs each [Menget has kept them in his file, since it was presumably he who paid them].
