MONTMORENCY (Henry 1er, comte de DAMVILLE, puis Duc de) Maréchal et Connétable de France (Chantilly/ Oise 1534 - Pézenas 1614) - Signed January 20, 1577, as "Maréchal de France, Gouverneur et Lieutenant Général pour le Roy au pays de Languedoc." Special mandate by these presents "to keep in the obedience of the King under our command the place of FRONTIGNAN (Hérault). For these reasons, we mandate and order that you make a general search of the said town for all weapons, both offensive and defensive, and to place them under a faithful inventory in the place where they are kept and guarded, and to return them when the occasion arises...". (HENRY DE montmorency fought on the Catholic side during the Wars of Religion, and was made Marshal in 1567. After the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in Paris in 1572, he joined the Protestants in Languedoc in 1574. In 1576, he joined the party of King Henri III.)
