Boxing / Tom Molyneux (1784-1818) - Lot 7
Boxing / Tom Molyneux (1784-1818) Ceramic figurine probably representing Tom Molyneux, famous African-American boxer of the early XIXᵉ century, considered one of the very first black champions in boxing history. A former slave who became free after a decisive victory, Molyneux left the United States in 1809 for England, where in 1810 he faced British champion Tom Cribb in a legendary bout. This 20th-century piece (probably based on a 19th-century model) shows the boxer in fighting stance, with the name "Tom Molyneux" inscribed on the base. Height: 19 cm This object testifies to the enduring admiration for this boxer, an African-American pioneer in the world of sports.
