NASA. APOLLO 8 mission. Historic lift-off of the SATURNE V rocket from Cape Kenndy, Florida, on December 21, 1968. The APOLLO 8 mission, comprising astronauts Frank BORMAN, James LOVELL and William ANDERS, was the 1st in history to take men out of Earth orbit and project them into lunar orbit. The APOLLO 8 mission will produce some of the most legendary photographs in the history of the human conquest of space, including those of the Earth in full format floating in the vacuum of space, the 1st survey of the Earth observed by a human from lunar orbit, the 1st photographs of the far side of the Moon, and so on. APOLLO 8 is also the 1st manned mission for the SATURNE V rocket.
