NASA. LARGE FORMAT. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) w - Lot 248
NASA. LARGE FORMAT. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) was launched on July 22, 1999 aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, as part of mission STS-93. This image is the result of combining a dozen observations made by the CXO in a 130-light-year region at the center of the Milky Way over the past five years. The colors represent low (red), medium (green) and high (blue) energy X-rays. Thanks to Chandra's unique resolving power, astronomers have been able to identify thousands of point sources of X-rays from neutron stars, black holes, white dwarfs, foreground stars and background galaxies. All that remains is a diffuse X-ray glow extending from the upper left to the lower right, in the direction of the galaxy's disk. 1999. Vintage chromogenic print. Numbering in the margin on the front. Legend on label on back. 40.6 x 40.6CM with margins.
