Saturn is truly Lord of the Rings in this latest shot from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, taken on July 4, 2020, when this opulent giant planet was 1,349 million kilometers from Earth. This new image of Saturn was taken in summer in the planet's northern hemisphere. Hubble detected several small atmospheric storms. These are transient phenomena that seem to appear and disappear with each annual observation. Banding in the northern hemisphere remains pronounced, as Hubble's 2019 observations show, with several bands changing color slightly from one year to the next. The ringed planet's atmosphere is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium, with traces of ammonia, methane, water vapor and hydrocarbons giving it a yellowish-brown color. Vintage chromogenic print.
