PESTE DE 1720. Marquis De LA VRILLIÈRE (Louis PHELYPEAUX, Co - Lot 92
PESTE DE 1720. Marquis De LA VRILLIÈRE (Louis PHELYPEAUX, Comte de SAINT-FLORENTIN; 1672-1725) French statesman, Minister of the King's Household, Secretary of the Regency under the Duc d'ORLÉANS - Letter signed La Vrillière, in Paris on July 3, 1724. To Mr de VAUVENARGUES, concerning the ravages of the Plague of 1720. 2 pages in-folio: "Monsieur. His Royal Highness Monseigneur le Duc d'ORLÉANS, to whom I gave an account of your letter of the 20th of last month, was very pleased to see that health is getting better and better in AIX (Aix-en-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône), and we hope that this city will soon be absolutely delivered from the cruel plague with which it has been afflicted. As for the doctor and surgeon you no longer need, and whom you would like to have sent back to Languedoc, not only does His Royal Highness not consider it appropriate, but she would even strongly approve of Mr. le Duc de ROQUELAURE's refusal to receive them if they proposed to go there, and she has asked me to instruct you to send them to ARLES where they may be useful and even necessary, as we have learned that there is a shortage of them there...".
