Alexandre DUMAS (1802-1870) - Lot 179
Alexandre DUMAS (1802-1870)
Autograph manuscript, 12 pages, in folio
Ubrain Grandier, 11th tableau from the play written with Auguste Maquet in 1850
Alexandre Dumas's Urbain Grandier is a historical play inspired by a true 17th-century event: the trial of a priest falsely accused of witchcraft by nuns allegedly possessed by witchcraft. Against a backdrop of authoritarian rule under Louis XIII and Richelieu, the case became a political tool to eliminate an intellectual opponent. Through this drama in five acts and thirteen tableaux, Dumas denounces religious intolerance, the manipulations of power and the injustices done in the name of moral order.
