Gustav Adolf MOSSA (1883-1971) Framing studies, 1908. Ink on lightly squared paper. The drawing shows a proposed frame for the famous symbolist painting Pierrot s'en va (1906), an empty frame and a fantastic monster. Handwritten inscriptions in pencil take up a line from Shakespeare: Mais qu'ils portent le secret, comme nos acteurs romains, sans apparence d'abattement et d'un air imperturbable (Jules Cesar), followed by the words Obscurite ou l'obscur. Estate stamp g. a. mossa lower left. Sheet numbered 4 in pencil top right. 26.5 x 21 cm Framed under glass (one rod detached).
