Gabriele d'Annunzio (1863-1938), writer Set of two autograph - Lot 232
Gabriele d'Annunzio (1863-1938), writer Set of two autograph documents: - an autograph letter signed, without place or date [December 23, 1899 according to a pencil note], addressed to Commendatore Guido Biagi, Biblioteca Laurenziana in Florence. In Italian. D'Annunzio is ill and hopes to recover day by day, but the fever persists. He proposes to postpone the planned breakfast until another Sunday, and asks his correspondent to greet Count Tenerini - An autograph letter signed, without place or date. A magnificent letter of amorous admiration, perhaps addressed to his mistress, the actress Eleonora Duse, or to Sarah Bernhardt: "Tonight I will come to hear you for the third time. And deep down I'm feeling a strange impatience. How I felt, last night, your deep and precious life. Gabriele d'Annunzio. Friday. "Me ne frego" letterhead [literally: I don't care] Since the letter is in French, and Eleonora Duse is Italian, we prefer to think of Sarah Bernhardt as the addressee.
Enclosed is a facsimile of the latter letter, as well as a set of documents from Eleonora Duse: - a signed autograph letter sending her "best regards and wishes" to a lady she hoped to see again - a small signed autograph card, in Italian, sending her best wishes - three telegrams from March 1913 addressed to singer Yvette Guilbert, the first referring to an offer of work declined by Eleonora Duse, which Yvette Guilbert had taken badly. Duse promised to explain later, and continued to profess her admiration and love for her correspondent. The second to organize a joint project. The third to announce his departure from Rome.
