Photo of the Sacramento Valley, California. On July 23, 1972, NASA launched the first Earth observation satellite, then known as ERTS, Earth Resources Technology Satellite, later renamed Landsat 1, to study and monitor the Earth's landmasses. Three colors - green, red and infrared - seen and recorded separately by the satellite were combined at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, Maryland). Vintage NASA black & white print (20.5 x 25.5cm), dated September 29, 1972, captioned on the back and numbered 72-H-1319.
