Acrylic inclusion block containing a sample of aluminized polyamide film from an original multilayer insulating blanket (MLI) covering the exterior of the Hubble Space Telescope. It was removed on December 24, 1999 from the door of compartment10 of the support module during maintenance mission3A by astronauts Steven Smith and John Grunsfeld of mission STS-103.
This material traveled more than 2.4 billion kilometers in orbit, from the launch of mission STS-31 on April 24, 1990 (Hubble deployment) to the landing of mission STS-103 on December 27, 1999.
On the reverse of the block, a photo of the Hubble telescope indicates with an arrow the origin of this sample.
