LAVAL Guy-André-Pierre de MONTMORENCY, duc de (1723 - 1798) Maréchal de France en 1783 - Letter signed "MONTMORENCY" (He was then Lieutenant General in Pays d'AUNIS) - VERSAILLES (78) January 30, 1779 - to M. JUIF DE SURAND - Nice letter of 3pp in-folio, concerning the Gardes-Côtes du Pays d'AUNIS - "I have received, Sir, the Ordinance that the King has just issued concerning the Gardes-Côtes. You will see that His Majesty has taken care to give this troop a more useful, economical and distinguished formation. The Pays d'AUNIS, in which the former Capitainerie de CHARENTE is located, will henceforth be divided into four divisions, one of which will be called the Division de MARANS, the other the Division de DOMPIERRE, the other the Division de BOURGNEUF and the other the Division de LE BREUIL. Each of these divisions will be divided into companies of 50 men." He gives the name of each of the 4 Companies in each Division and the choice of subjects for the Officer positions "from among the most notable inhabitants of the Côtes."
