Cycling / Tour / Championship / J. Alavoine Jean Alavoine at the finish in 1909 Press photo, silver print 12 x 16.5 cm (small gap bottom left) Jean ALAVOINE (1888-1943) was one of the greatest French champions of all time in 1909, his best year along with 1919 and 1922, when he was 2nd in the Tour. In 1909, at the age of 21, the Roubaix native was 2nd in Paris-Tours and the Tour of Belgium, 3rd in the Tour de France, where he won 4 stages, and a radiant French champion. Our photo shows him on cloud nine at the finish. He is coached by François Faber and Alphonse Baugé. A rider as gifted as he was witty, he deserved to win the Grand Boucle. He died in the race in 1943.
