Cycling/Desgrange/Montbéliard/Tour. Exceptional original pre - Lot 58
Cycling/Desgrange/Montbéliard/Tour. Exceptional original press photo, silver print, showing Henri Desgrange (1865-1940) at the heart of his creation, the Tour, and in motion, please. This very rare action photo was taken on Monday, July 18, 1921, in Montbéliard, at the second refueling checkpoint on stage 12 (Geneva-Strasbourg, 371km). It's 11:29 a.m. in the Franc-Comtois capital, and a first peloton of 30 champions led by Belgian Hector Heusghem arrives at the checkpoint. Desgrange and Desmarets are at 100 strokes...From behind, but almost more recognizable than from the front, the boss, with golf pants, his lion's mane back, and his famous jacket brandishes the 3 fingers... "You only have 3 minutes, 3 minutes of neutralization only!!!" You can imagine the jostle, and the bright eyes of the children...That's the magic of the Tour. They were there. You're there too. It's 11:32 a.m., business done in a jiffy, and the best are off to a flying start. They've just arrived from Geneva, already 216 km in the bag, and Strasbourg, where Honoré Barthélémy will win, is still a long way off! 13X18/TBE.
