Portrait of Alméric Berthier de Lasalle during the Spanish Expedition, in the uniform of a chasseur captain wearing the cross of the Order of St. Ferdinand of Spain, 1824
Oil on canvas signed and dated lower left
65 x 54 cm

He was the nephew of Marshal Berthier, Prince of Wagram and Neuchatel, and son of General Victor Léopold Berthier, who died in 1807.
He was adopted in 1809 by General Comte de Lasalle, known for having been, along with Jochim Murat, one of the very first swordsmen of the Empire.
Alméric served first in the bodyguards from 1814 to 1815, then in the hussars from 1815 to 1820. Promoted to captain, he joined the 4th chasseur de l'Ariège, then in 1830 the 2nd cuirassiers of the royal guard, where he ended his military career.
He was awarded the Order of St. Ferdinand of Spain in 1823 for taking part in the Spanish Expedition that same year (an expedition whose aim was to restore King Ferdinand VII to the throne).
