Boxing / Song / Sheet music / Firpo / Argentina / Tango / Mo - Lot 7
Boxing / Song / Sheet music / Firpo / Argentina / Tango / Mondial Firpo" sheet music, Tango for piano by Adolfo R. Avilés (1898-1971) Circa 1924, Unico Editor Autorizado, Alfredo Perrotti, 4 pages 34 x 26.5 cm Surprisingly large format: "Firpo", tango for piano, with portrait of champion Angel Firpo and facsimile dedication, on the right a fight scene. Argentine heavyweight star Firpo (1894-1960) was the victim of one of the sport's greatest scandals. South American heavyweight champion, he had 37 fights (31 victories, 26 by KO) and beat former world champion Jess Willard. But on September 14, 1923, in New York, in front of over 100,000 spectators, he knocked champion Jack Dempsey out of the ring in the 1st round. Dempsey fell into the crowd and was pulled up by reporters after the ten-second count... He beat Firpo in the next round. As no protest was made, injustice prevailed. This fight inspired painters and filmmakers alike: Georges Bellows created an iconic canvas, freezing the moment when Firpo throws Dempsey out of the ring. This "sentimental" tango is a rare musical tribute to a champion betrayed by history.
