Boxing / Jack Johnson / Déro / USA - Lot 13
Boxing / Jack Johnson / Déro / USA Robert Décremps, alias DÉRO (1920-2000) Cartoon of Jack Johnson India ink on paper, signed 50 x 39 cm Original illustration for Pierre Cangioni's "La Fabuleuse Histoire de la Boxe" (1977). Jack Johnson (1878-1946), born the son of a slave, is best known for his pugilistic period, which spans 1897 to 1931. He fought 104 times, achieving 73 victories, including 40 by KO. Jack was built like a giant, hence his Galveston title. The first black world heavyweight champion in 1908, he held the title until 1915. In the match of the century against Jeffries (1910), with white supremacy at stake, he had the bad taste to win. In Paris and Barcelona (against Cravan in 1916), he never ceased to surprise, even creating the Cotton Club in Harlem in 1920.
