Boxing / Primo Carnera / Henry Armstrong / Déro - Lot 18
Boxing / Primo Carnera / Henry Armstrong / Déro Robert Décremps, alias DÉRO (1920-2000) Two cartoons: Primo Carnera and Henry Armstrong India ink on paper, signed, captioned Caricature of Suzanne Lenglen behind that of Primo Carnera 50 x 39 cm Original illustrations for Pierre Cangioni's "La Fabuleuse Histoire de la Boxe" (1977). Italian champion Primo Carnera (1906-1967), a "giant with feet of clay", is ironically caricatured as Rodin's Thinker. The mafia, the facist regime and Léon Sée shamelessly exploited him as a fairground phenomenon. Despite all his avatars, he was crowned world heavyweight champion after his victory over Scharkey in 1933. He inspired films ("Plus dure sera la chute"), and starred in a few. What remains is a fabulous pugilistic and human adventure. Déro summarizes in one image the entire career of the phenomenal Henry Armstrong (1912-1988), who was world champion in 3 different categories (featherweight, lightweight, welterweight), and in 1938 even held all 3 titles at once. He won 151 of his 181 fights between 1931 and 1945, including 101 by KO. Our "Homicide" had dynamite in his fists.
