Cycling / Cyclotourism
Paperback: "La France en bicyclette. Étapes d'un touriste de Paris à Grenoble et Marseille" by Jean Bertot. 1894, 410 p., 18,5x12.
Stains on cover, small loss lower right.
Jean Bertot (Bayeux 1854 - Lisieux 1934) is a phenomenon of cycling literature. Born on rue de la Chaine, he left a first-rate body of work on the bicycle as a means of traveling and discovering France, enhanced here by a plunge into the depths of France at the end of the 19th century (Melun, Fontainebleau and Pougues-les-Eaux...). Bertot is a pedaling guide with a gentle vein, whose cycling work (12 vols.) may have influenced Géo Lefèvre or Henri Desgrange.
