University Games / PUC / Petitjean / Paris - Lot 144
University Games / PUC / Petitjean / Paris 100-franc bond issued in 1922 by the Paris Université Club (sports section), part of the Association Générale des Étudiants de Paris, for the construction of the stadium to host the 1923 World University Games. Bond subscribed by Mr. Jean Petitjean, the father of these Games, on September 27, 1922. Bond no. 6, one of the very first. The signatures are handwritten, and of course the president's signature (left) is that of Jean Petitjean. Fine condition, slightly corroded at the corners. Complete with 10 vouchers running to 1933. Details of operation and reimbursement on verso. 12 x 21.5 cm Jean Petitjean is the founding father of the PUC. Born in Nièvre in 1889, this chemical engineer devoted his entire life to student sports. When "this mad genius" died in 1969, his last words were for his PUC: "It's my whole life, all my friends, all my emotions, all my joys...". The inventor of the World University Games piloted 14 editions until 1938, organized the 1947 Games, then the Reunification Games at Charléty in 1957. His immense, all-too-forgotten and little-known work really began on May 6, 1923, with the inauguration of the Porte Dorée Stadium, and the first Games: 15,000 spectators, Paddock's exploits, and a jubilant Paris gripped by a purple madness. He unquestionably belongs to the Tricolor Musketeers who invented world sport, along with Coubertin, Desgrange and Rimet. This little action is a nod to oblivion.
