Nasa. LARGE FORMAT. Astronaut Bruce McCandless II (Space Shuttle Mission STS 41-B) takes part in a historic spacewalk. He is photographed a few meters from the cabin of the Space Shuttle Challenger in Earth orbit. This spacewalk represented the first use of a manually-operated, nitrogen-powered device known as the Animated Maneuvering Unit (MMU), which allows much greater mobility than previous spacewalkers who had to use restrictive tethers.
