The smallest and reddest galaxies, around 100, may be among the most distant known, when the universe was only 800 million years old. The nearest galaxies - the larger, brighter, well-defined spirals and ellipticals - flourished around 1 billion years ago, when the cosmos was 13 billion years old. This historic image from the HUBBLE telescope required over 800 exposures taken during 400 orbits around the Earth over a period of 12 days. 2004. vintage chromogenic print. Numbering on front.
