MARINE. Jean-Baptiste GRIVEL, Vice-Admiral, Senator (Brive/ - Lot 581
MARINE. Jean-Baptiste GRIVEL, Vice-Admiral, Senator (Brive/ Corrèze 1778 - Brest 1869) - Autograph letter signed from BREST (Finistère) February 19, 1839, 2 pages in-4°, to his Dear Director. He complains about the lack of Officers that the Port of BREST now has at its disposal. There are 13 Lieutenants and 20 Ensigns missing, and no better for surgeons, and explains his remedy: "Give the Corvettes de charge to old Lieutenants with no future... return to the Captains of the Corvettes all the Bâtiments de guerre proper dits, except the colonial schooners and those of the Granville fishery... put only two Surgeons per frigate and three per Vaisseau when the ships are in service in the Mediterranean... farewell and see you soon + His lithographed portrait is enclosed.
