On board are 7 astronauts: Loren Shriver, Commander (3rd flight), Andrew Allen, pilot (1st flight), Marsha Ivins (2nd flight), Jeffrey Hoffman (3rd flight), Franklin Chang-Diaz (3rd flight), and above all Claude Nicollier and Franco Malerba, who become respectively the first Swiss and the first Italian in space.
