NASA. LARGE FORMAT. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) w - Lot 142
NASA. LARGE FORMAT. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) was launched on July 22, 1999 aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, as part of mission STS-93. This image is the result of combining a dozen observations made by the CXO in a 130-light-year region at the center of the Milky Way over the past five years. The colors represent low (red), medium (green) and high (blue) energy X-rays. Thanks to Chandra's unique resolving power, astronomers have been able to identify thousands of point sources of X-rays from neutron stars, black holes, white dwarfs, foreground stars and background galaxies. All that remains is a diffuse X-ray glow extending from the upper left to the lower right, in the direction of the galaxy's disk. 1999. Vintage chromogenic print. Label on back. 40.6 x 40.6 cm with margins.
