NASA. MARS PLANET. PATHFINDER MISSION. Yogi is a meter-sized - Lot 202
NASA. MARS PLANET. PATHFINDER MISSION. Yogi is a meter-sized rock located about 5 meters northwest of the Mars Pathfinder lander. It is the second rock visited by the APXS (alpha proton X-ray spectrometer) instrument on the Sojourner rover. This mosaic shows the super-resolution techniques applied to the second APXS target rock, which was poorly illuminated in the rover's front camera view taken before the instrument was deployed. Super resolution was applied to answer questions about the texture of this rock and what it could tell us about its mode of origin. This Yogi mosaic was produced by combining four "Super Pan" images taken with the IMP camera. This composite color mosaic consists of 7 images of the right eye, taken with different color filters, which were enlarged by 500% and added using Adobe Photoshop to produce, in effect, a super-resolution panchromatic image that is sharper than any individual image would be. This panchromatic image was then colorized with the red, green and blue filtered images from the same sequence. Color balance was adjusted to approximate the true color of Mars. Shadows were processed separately from the rest of the rock and combined with the rest of the scene to bring out details of Yogi's shadow that would be too dark to be seen at the same time as the sunlit surfaces. Mars Pathfinder is the second spacecraft in NASA's Discovery program, which consists of low-cost spacecraft with very specific scientific objectives. Vintage chromogenic print. Numbering in the margin on the front. Legend on back label. 25.4 x 20.4cm with margins.
