NASA. LARGE FORMAT. DEEP SPACE. A pictorial photograph of the Messier 101 galaxy, a swirling spiral of stars, gas and dust. This galaxy is almost twice as wide as our own Milky Way. The Spitzer view, taken in infrared light, reveals the galaxy's delicate dust lanes in the form of yellow-green filaments. It's in these dense dust clouds that new stars can form. In this image, dust heated by the light of hot young stars glows red. The rest of the galaxy's hundreds of billions of stars are less visible, forming a blue haze. Astronomers can use infrared light to examine the dust clouds where stars are born.
