Double-sided Ethiopian triptych icon - Lot 10
Double-sided Ethiopian triptych icon Tempera on wood panel covered with gesso. On one side, the central panel shows the Virgin and Child surrounded by archangels. On the left panel, Gabra Manfas Qeddus is depicted above two rows of saints. The right panel depicts the Crucifixion above another equestrian saint killing a pagan. On the other side, the central panel depicts two large standing abbot saints, Takla Haymanot and Ewostatewos, above a row of five smaller saints, each holding a cross. On the left-hand panel, Christ raising the souls of Adam and Eve is depicted in the upper register, and Saint George slaying the dragon in the lower register. On the right panel, other saints and an image of the Covenant of Mary, depicting Christ blessing the Virgin. Ethiopia, Gondar, 17th century, circa 1630. 32 x 25 x 3 cm (closed format).
