Ethiopian or Sudanese Koran, 1773 A very fine and rare manuscript copy of a Koran from sub-Saharan Africa, dated 1773. It contains an introduction and an orthographic index setting out the principles according to which it was copied, aimed at facilitating correct reading of the Qur'an. Paper, black and colored inks. 17 lines of writing in black ink per page, sura titles in red, vocalization in black, red and green, margins framed in red and blue, and a marginal zigzag commentary arranged diagonally in red. Original leather binding with central medallion and stamped corners. 32 x 21.5 cm. Provenance: Sam Fogg Gallery, London.
