Gospel in Slavonic (Евангеліе на церковно- славянскомъ языкѣ) Kiev, printing works of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra (Киево-Печерская Лавра), circa 1838 (during the reign of Nicholas I). Printed in red and black Cyrillic type, with four full-page engravings of the evangelists. In-folio. 322 leaves with 29 leaf supplement. Two pages of manuscript in Russian at the end. Each page is bordered by a woodcut, as well as numerous ornaments and initials. The text is complete, but the title and probably one or two preliminary leaves are missing. Remarkable binding with silver spine and embossed silver boards. Five medallions are missing from the first plate. The second plate depicts the Agony of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The clasps are also missing. Provenance: former Cornelius J. Hauck collection (1893-1967). Condition: moderate wear and tear to binding. The first twelve leaves have two small nail holes in the cover.
