Two illuminated pages from a Russian religious manuscript. One depicts Christ before the High Priest, with Peter denying Christ below and Judas hiding in the lower corner. The other depicts Christ arrested by Roman soldiers, with an enigmatic scene above of Christ in a stream, rescued, or perhaps attacked, again by Roman soldiers, two of whom have a rope around his halo. Charming, naive and lively paintings, probably intended to illustrate the Passion section of a Gospel lectionary. Russia, second half of the 18th century, 21 x 17 cm. 2 leaves in cardboard and passe-partout. Provenance: Charles Edwin Puckett, medieval manuscripts and rare books, Dallas, Texas.
