Large in-4°, 2, 847, 178, 1, 314, 1. Title page with a large woodcut depicting a man sowing and the motto and anagram of Tornesius (his art in God), titles of the Apocrypha and the New Testament in ornamental borders, apocryphal books not mentioned in the table of contents. Some very light browning, some edges stained black; Beautiful cold-stamped sow-skin binding, ribbed spine, defective clasps, later paper title-piece on spine. This Italian version was the Bible par excellence of Italian Protestant refugees in Switzerland, published by the Lucchese exile Giovanni Diodati (1576-1649) at his own expense after 14 years of hard work. This Bible was immediately praised by the most learned men of the time, and even those who judged it harshly had to acknowledge that Diodati had done a valuable job. Provenance: Rudolphi and Klemm (engraved bookplate). Piece acquired by the seller at a Sotheby's auction of Dr. Charles Cadwell Ryrie's impressive collection of Bibles, held in New York on December 5, 2016. Dr. Ryrie (1925-2016) was an American biblical scholar and dean of doctoral studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. Considered one of the most influential American theologians of the 20th century, he was an avid collector of rare Bibles and fine biblical manuscripts.
