Sermons on Purgatory (late 18th - early 19th century) - Lot 174
Sermons on Purgatory (late 18th - early 19th century) Manuscript on paper in Turkish transcribed with Armenian characters. 108 pages, continuous text in notrgir (Armenian cursive script), in black ink. 18.5 x 16 cm (7.3 x 6.3 inches) Bound in period black leather. This manuscript is a collection of sermons on Purgatory. Among the texts is sermon number 179 by St. Caesarius of Arles, a remarkable theological testimony to a profoundly Catholic conception of Purgatory. The manuscript develops a description of sins inspired by St. Paul's epistles, as well as a reflection on the theological significance and necessity of Purgatory in Christian doctrine. Purgatory in Christian doctrine. In terms of doctrinal content, the manuscript can undoubtedly be attributed to the Armenian Catholic community of the Ottoman Empire, since the Armenian Apostolic Church rejects the notion of Purgatory. Linguistically, the text is mostly in Turkish, but written entirely in Armenian characters, as was common practice in Armenian-Catholic and Latin-speaking circles at the time. A few Armenian words can be found here and there, testifying to the bilingualism of the author and his readership.
