Hanna Vardapet (Հովհաննես Հաննա), History of Jerusalem (Պատմ - Lot 177
Hanna Vardapet (Հովհաննես Հաննա), History of Jerusalem (Պատմութիւն Երուսաղէմի) Armenian manuscript on paper, copied from a printed edition, probably in the 19th century. Manuscript in two parts in one volume, the first on the History of Jerusalem, the second on the Church of the the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. In-4° (21 × 13.7 cm); 7, 152, 161 leaves. Cursive writing in black ink, occasional titles in red, 20 lines per page, recto-verso, on Prospero watermarked wove paper. Bound in 19th-century brown cloth. Some foxing, one leaf detached, but a clean and complete copy. This manuscript is a late copy, probably from the 19th century, of the famous treatise Պատմութիւն Երուսաղէմի (History of Jerusalem) by the vardapet Hovhannes Hanna (1693-1733), an eminent Armenian cleric and chronicler of Jerusalem. The original work, written in the early 18th century, was printed several times in Constantinople, between 1731 and 1814. The work is a spiritual and historical guide to the holy sites in and around Jerusalem, describing in detail the Christian shrines, particularly those under the care of the Armenian Patriarchate and the Brotherhood of St. James. In it, Hanna pays tribute to Patriarch Grigor Ch't'ayakir ("the Chain-Bearer"), whom he served as vicar and collaborator, and whose restoration of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and its Armenian outbuildings, circa 1719-1721, he recounts. The text combines history, topography and moral exhortations addressed to Armenian pilgrims. It is a valuable source on relations between the patriarchates of Jerusalem and Constantinople in the early 18th century, and was widely used by later historians such as Tchamchian. This anonymous copy was probably made in an Armenian monastic milieu in the 19th century, based on one of the Constantinople editions. Printed copies of the Badmouthioun Ieruventemi are extremely rare today, and were probably not always available in the Armenian provinces in the 19th century. This rarity explains why handwritten copies such as the present volume were made, to ensure the continued dissemination of this fundamental text within religious and literary circles.
