Synaxary (Յայսմաւուրք), 1730 - Lot 223
Synaxary (Յայսմաւուրք), 1730 Constantinople, impr. Krikor de Merzifon (Գրիգոր Մարզվանեցո), 1730-1731. In-folio (41.5 x 27 cm). [402] (of [403?]) leaves. Title page in woodcut historiated architectural frame on right edge, signed in plate: ՌՃԾԵ [1706] ՁԵՌԱՄԲ ԳՐԳՈՐԻ (1706, by Grigor's hand); numerous woodcut illustrations (6 full-page); profusion of frontispiece, woodcut decorations, including marginal ornaments, divisional bands and zoomorphic lettering. Each page of text is decorated with a typographic frame. Restored morocco binding with preserved antique calf boards and metal screws. Page 38 is missing. Marginal dampstains over a large part of the volume, numerous leaves reinserted in the binding, scattered tears and occasional marginal restorations generally not affecting the text, paper wear along the edges at the beginning and end causing loss of text on the last leaf, worming in the inner margins towards the end erasing some words. This is a second edition of a 1706 compilation of saints' lives, arranged according to the liturgical calendar, a masterpiece of the printing works of Gregory of Merzifon (Grigor or Krikor Marzvanetsi). The title page, engraved in an altar composition, is one of the finest examples of Armenian printing (Pehlivanian, page 77). Provenance: Swann Auction Galleries, New York City, sale #2243, April 11, 2011, lot 21.
