Jean-Baptiste VAQUETTE de GRIBEAUVAL (Amiens/Somme 1715 - Paris 1789) Lieutenant General and Engineer. Thanks to his reforms, French artillery at the start of the Revolution was by far the best in Europe. The calibers in use for a century date back to him. Letter A.S. Paris, March 19, 1778, to M. Lesansguerre. 2 pages in-4° : He expresses great satisfaction with M. de Miscault's work, "...As for the foundations, which they say he took too low and made too thick, I believe that building in earth on rocks where the waters perpetually cause movements, one cannot make anything too solid...".
