MEURTHE-ET-MOSELLE. Letter on the letterhead of the Bishopri - Lot 329
MEURTHE-ET-MOSELLE. Letter on the letterhead of the Bishopric of NANCY, left Nancy June 16, 1814, addressed to the Marquis d'OSMOND (Antoine Eustache d'OSMOND l'Évêque de NANCY et de TOUL (1754 - 1823).He wrote, among other things, about the Coronation of Louis XVIII: "I don't want, my good friend, to leave you for a moment in the worry I was able to give you yesterday, after the absence (for no apparent reason) of our poor Rosalie... We would like my nephew to be able to stay at least in Metz or Stenay, the two other districts assigned for the present to the Hussars with which the suppressed regiment is being incorporated. M. de Vaublanc will perhaps have enough credit to obtain this slight privilege from General Lacoste .... Indeed, the Commissaires were not long in being recalled, as ours left this morning. I think that in general this is a wise measure, despite the personal regret I share at the loss of Count Roger, who was initially appointed Governor General of Lorraine, and who will remain at least a loyal knight and a very amiable boy: he is delighted to be going back to his parents, and on his way he passes through Cirey. Alas, will the Commissioners in St Domingue do anything about it? I hope so, for a thousand reasons. I don't expect the mining issue to be resolved any time soon; since there is no established council. Is it true that the KING will be SACRED on AUGUST 25? Where would he be? I don't imagine that for this ceremony, as in NAPOLEONIAN times, an all-Episcopal go-ahead would be necessary: yet it would take nothing less than to draw me out of my august retreat. If a new treaty is made with the POPE, I imagine it will only be to make a few additions or modifications to the CONCORDAT of 1801. Tell me, would you believe (we have fools who flatter themselves) that the restitution of woods decreed in favor of landowners in general could be applied. And to ecclesiastical life owners? I don't think so. It would certainly be no less just, but it seems impossible to me. We'll find enough here to provide the bishop and the chapters very adequately. The METZ chapter would be much richer. Hugs to all... If the dear General writes to me, I shall thank him, for his letters are very friendly to me: my sister is very grateful for these kind words.
