HAUTES-PYRÉNÉES. Letter from a Student to his mother Madame - Lot 331
HAUTES-PYRÉNÉES. Letter from a Student to his mother Madame DARRICAU née LAMOTTE, in MAUBOURGUET (65), written from SAINT-PÉ (Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre) on July 28, 1814 - 2 ½ pages in-8° : "My Dear Mother. It is with the greatest pleasure that I received your letter through the last TARBES market. I received the pants and vest at the same time as your letter; the vest is a little too tight and a little too short, but I put it on as it is, and thank you for it, knowing well what sacrifices you are obliged to make to maintain a family as large as ours is. I only received the bonnet last Sunday, and it fits me well. A few days ago I saw Monsieur de NAYS passing through here with his daughter. I ran to his carriage and kissed him; he asked me, to amuse him, if I wanted to go to PAU. Finally, after a few moments of conversation, he left me, telling me to always come to him when I needed something, and that he would get it for me if it depended on him. In ST-PÉ, we had the honor of seeing His Royal Highness Monseigneur le Duc d'ANGOULÊME pass under our windows, but because we hadn't been warned, the town didn't honor him, the bells weren't rung and the municipality didn't come to compliment him. The Prefect himself had gone to wait for him on the other side of the town, so that Prince that he was, he had no other retinue than a General and a few gendarmes, who were sent here in case he passed through. I hope that Monsieur Estarac will finally obtain a pension of one hundred pistols, which he well deserves; for the day before yesterday a General, his former pupil, was here, and promised him all his services to M de Fontanes, the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Foreign Relations, saying that it was unworthy that such a learned and estimable man should not be rewarded for his long labors. About Mr. Estarac, he told me to ask you if you'd rather have a dog or a bitch. I wouldn't have hesitated to ask for the bitch, but the dog is smaller and whiter. Please send me several books that M Estirac told me to ask you for, listed below: Les tables logarithmes, sinus, tangentes amp; par cahier stéréotype .. sont trouvent à TOULOUSE ou à BORDEAUX . Fables de LA fontaines - can be found everywhere in Tarbes. Poésies d'Horace--this last one is found here. there are two send me the best one. Virgil... can also be found here. Œuvres complètes de Jean-Baptiste Rousseau, or at least all his lyric poems; we have only the choice, while M. Estirac asks for the whole thing. Adieu, my dear Maman, I embrace you and the rest of the family with all my heart. H DARRICAU - P.S. The tables of logarithms, sines, etc., are not as hurried as the other books. Madame MICOLAU told me she was going to send MARIE-JEANE for a discussion she had with M Nicolau; I'm sorry to hear that, as she was a good girl. M Estirac sends his regards; it's already been several days since he made me start algebra."
