Marie LAFARGE dite Madame Lafarge. Marie Aimée Fortunée Cape - Lot 413
Marie LAFARGE dite Madame Lafarge. Marie Aimée Fortunée Capelle (1816-1852) was the daughter of Baron Antoine Laurent Capelle, Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Artillery Corps, and Caroline Fortunée Collard (daughter of Jacques Collard de Montjouy, Député de l'Aisne). On August 11, 1839, she married Charles Pouch-Lafarge, entrepreneur, ironmaster and mayor of Beyssac. This marriage gave rise to the "Lafarge Affair", as she was found guilty of poisoning her husband. In 1840, she was sentenced to forced labor for life and to be exposed in TULLE's town square. According to some sources, she was a great-granddaughter of Philippe Égalité and Félicité de Genlis. Marie Lafarge was granted a presidential pardon by Prince-President Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte shortly before his death - Unsigned autograph letter (circa 1838) speaking of love and friendship. 2 pages in-4°: "Love is the union of hearts, friendship the alliance of souls. Love is the surrender of self, friendship the gift of self. Love is a blind superstition, friendship an enlightened religion...".
