NASA. LARGE FORMAT. HUBBLE TELESCOPE. This magnificent galax - Lot 221
NASA. LARGE FORMAT. HUBBLE TELESCOPE. This magnificent galaxy is the product of a collision between two disk galaxies that began 300 million years ago. It illustrates the intermediate stages in the merging process: the disks of the parent galaxies have merged, but the nuclei have not yet coalesced. It features a strange-looking tail of stars and a prominent band of dust that runs diagonally across the center of the image, obscuring the galaxy. NGC 520 is one of the brightest galaxy pairs in the sky, and can be observed with a small telescope towards the Pisces constellation, Pisces, looking like a comet. It lies around 100 million light-years away and around 100,000 light-years in diameter. The pair of galaxies is included in Arp's catalog of special galaxies as Arp 157. 2008.
Vintage chromogenic print. Numbering in the margin on the front. Legend on label on back. 40,6 X 40,6CM with margins.
