Cycling / Zimmermann / Raleigh / Bordeaux - Lot 34
Cycling / Zimmermann / Raleigh / Bordeaux "Raleigh of Nottingham, agent for the South West Chas Treps and Co, 3 cours de Tourny, Calcott Bros, Bayliss Thomas..."Lithographed canvas poster, center in Zimmermann color after G. Moore. Imprimerie A. Bellier, Bordeaux.130 x 98 cm. (Good condition, slight traces of folding) Arthur Augustus Zimmerman, the American from Camden, is so important that we don't even mention his name for this Bordeaux outing. Desgrange considered him a demigod. This poster evokes one of the summits of world cycling: the invincible Flying Yankee, champion of the Raleigh, but also Bordeaux and its Parc velodrome (333 m), then the best track in France. In 1894, Bordeaux eclipsed the Parisian tracks, and Zim was at the top of his game: world amateur title in 1893, hundreds of victories, records for the lap, kilometer and mile. On July 29, he gave a recital at the Parc. Then, in Aquitaine, he prepares for the event of the year: what if the invincible met the Loste brothers' fiery tandem? On September 16 in Bordeaux, brothers Henri and Ernest Loste await Zim for the mile of the century. The crowd is on its feet, the blue jersey comes back, comes back, but the straight is too short: the tandem triumphs by 3/4 of a length. A narrow finish, but a Loste victory. The tricolor flag goes up, Bordeaux is on fire. The event, unique in the annals of racing, is perpetuated by this extremely rare poster; specialists write that "Zim's defeat is more glorious than his previous victories".
