Omnisport / Medal - Lot 151
Omnisport / Medal Frédéric de VERNON (1858-1912), after Large uniface medallion featuring a profile of Helmeted Gaul surrounded by a Latin motto "Galliae Custos Honoris Vindex" ("Guardian of Gaul, Defender of Honor"). Gilded copper, possibly a workshop model, signed F. VERNON and dated 1895, traces of plaster on reverse. Diam. 19.4 cm This model is part of the allegorical and patriotic repertoire of Frédéric de Vernon, a major French medallist of the late 19th century. Our example corresponds to the format of the medallion in the Musée d'Orsay. Vernon's name is associated with the art of the sports medal, notably for the famous rectangular plaque awarded for the "physical exercise and sports" competitions at the Games of the II Olympiad in Paris in 1900, which has become one of the most emblematic models of Olympic iconography.
