LA BOURDONNAIS (L.-C. de): Nouveau traité du jeu des échecs. - Lot 63
LA BOURDONNAIS (L.-C. de): Nouveau traité du jeu des échecs. Paris, au Café de la Régence, 1833. In-8 contemporary green half-basane, smooth spine decorated (corners dulled, slight foxing). First edition. Louis-Charles Mahé de La Bourdonnais, (1795-1840 in London), was the grandson of the Comte de La Bourdonnais, an illustrious sailor who was governor of the Ile de France and the Ile Bourbon. He founded the first chess magazine, Le Palamède. A worthy successor to Philidor, he is considered one of the greatest chess players of all time. He spent his days at the Café de la Régence, where he was a pupil of the master Deschapelles, to whom the book is dedicated and whom he eventually defeated himself.
